THE 9 HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SERIES HD+

1. VARIANT DIVERSITY

GENERAL

In principle, we can classify the many models based on five aspects. These are weight, drum width, compaction type, application and engine technology. Information obtained during a meeting with the customer makes it simpler for us to offer the correct model for your requirements.

- Weight class: The Series HD+ comprises six weight classes ranging from 7 t to 14 t (15,432 to 30,864 lbs). If your customer requires a certain roller weight, only certain models come into question. 

- Drum width

- Compaction systems: We can also distinguish the different roller models by the type of compaction. The next page provides more information about the compaction systems. The order of the letters indicates the arrangement of the drums in the machine, e.g. HD+ 90 VO means vibration at the front - oscillation at the rear. High-frequency machines or machines with split drum are identified by the addition of -HF or -S.

- Application: The decisive criteria for selecting the right model are the kind of application and the size of the field. Of course, there are regional differences. More information about the areas of application is provided on the next page. The rollers of the HD+ can also be used for light earth work, e.g. the installation of frost protection.

1. Town centres / parking areas: These rollers are mostly used on smaller fields or where manoeuvrability and small turning radii are important.

2. Universal / outside of cities: A universal machine that is used both on larger streets in cities and outside of cities, e.g. to construct connecting roads.

3. Motorways / airports: These machines are used primarily on large fields where high area performance is required.

- Engine technology: The question of which machines are eligible for a customer may also be a question of the applicable exhaust emission standard. If the customer wants a 7 t (15,432 lbs) or 8 t (17,363 lbs) machine that meets the Stage IIIA/Tier 3 exhaust emission regulation requirements, the predecessor model HD 70 or HD 75 has to be offered. The abbreviation PH of some of the Series HD+ rollers stands for "Power Hybrid". This will be explained in more detail later on in the training.

2. COMPACTION

COMPACTION SYSTEMS

All tandem rollers with drums use vibration and/or oscillation and combination rollers use pneumatic wheels to effect compaction.

- Vibration: Compaction by the circular up-and-down movement of the drum and hence the vertical transmission of the compaction energy into the ground. This results in deep penetration. After each impact, the drum is lifted off the ground and therefore has no contact with the sub-base for about 50 % of the time. The following is important as regards selection:

- Vibration parameters:

+ "Individual front/rear": Amplitude and frequency can be adjusted independently of each other

+ "Synchronised front/rear": Amplitude and frequency cannot be adjusted separately from each other

+ High frequency: Compaction by vibration but with higher frequency (i.e. shorter impact intervals).

+ Split drum: The drum consists of two halves that are driven separately and is therefore especially suitable for sections with many bends

Fixed frequency: low frequency at high amplitude, high frequency at low amplitude. Frequency control option: The frequency can be adjusted up or down within defined limits using the +/- buttons. The frequency control keeps the pre-set frequency constant, so achieving homogeneous compaction.

- Vibration parameter "Individual front/rear":

- Vibration parameter "Synchronised front/rear":

+ Standard: for HD+ 90 - 140

+ Standard for HD+ 70i - 80i

- Oscillation: Compaction by the forward-backward rotational movement of the drum and hence the shearing forces transmitted into the asphalt. Since the drum is in constant contact with the ground, the ground is additionally compacted statically by the weight of the machine.

TYRES

Static compaction using the weight of the machine itself. The kneading and flexing effect of the tyres ensures good surface sealing. Sealing with pneumatic wheels is more effective than with drums as the soft tyre can also adjust to the asphalt's surface texture.

TRACK OFFSET AND DRUM DIAMETER

1. Track offset

The rear frame can be shifted hydraulically to the right or left so that the tracks of the two drums overlap. Especially suitable for compacting to the edge and for levelling out marks and/or imprints.

2. Drum diameters

A large drum diameter prevents the displacement of material.

Many details allow the driver to conveniently operate the HD+ compactor. Available driver's seat designs are synthetic leather or fabric. A backrest extension for the driver's seat can be selected as an accessory. A seat belt monitoring device is also available as an option.

ERGONOMICS STANDARD: OPERATOR PLATFORM

For the operator's platform there are more variants in addition to the ROPS cabin, as listed here: ROPS and operator's platform with handrails.

- ROPS cabin: ROPS cabin operator platform variant. Various designs of the ROPS cabin are available: Cabin with split door and cabin with non-split door. Both are available for Tier 3 and Tier 4 compactors.

For an improved field of vision, side window wipers are installed already in the ROPS cabin with non-split door.

In addition on HD+ 120(i) – 140 (i): Improved front window wiping area

Good to know: When the window is open and the seat moved up to the edge, the driver has an improved view of the drum edge. Split door, rear window wiper and optimised front window wiper can be retrofitted!

For the ROPS and operator's platform with handrails variants, a locking dashboard cover is available.

Visibility conditions

The compact design of the machine enables unobstructed view of the front and rear.	A body of 1 m height can still be identified at a distance of 1 m from the machine driver's cab.	Unobstructed view of drum and spraying beams from the spacious ROPS cabin.
Working lights: 4 halogen headlights (LED also available) for illuminating the working area, 2 facing forward and 2 facing backward. Lighting package as per road traffic regulations: Mounting of headlights at the front, reverse drive light, tail lights, indicators front and rear and stop lights rear to comply with German road regulations. Drum edge lighting: Additional illumination of the drum edge to achieve optimal compaction up to the edges.
Seat can be moved to the right and left and swivelled by 90° to either side.	The camera system monitors the working area behind the machine. The system comprises a camera mounted at the top rear of the cabin and a monitor in the driver's cab.

ERGONOMICS EASY DRIVE: OVERVIEW

Easy Drive combines intuitive operation with clearly structured user guidance and optimal ergonomics:

- Ergonomically optimised operator platform with mechanically sliding and swivelling driver's seat and adjustable steering column

- Multifunction armrest with joystick

- Language-neutral design

- Intuitive control of the most important functions

- Clearly arranged function keys

The Easy Drive control consists of three different elements.

- Dashboard: 3.5'' colour display, Settings for compaction parameters, Activate/deactivate lighting, Displays (control and warning displays, settings, filling levels, DPF)

If the lower or upper temperature limit is infringed (the limits can be set on the Settings page), the value is displayed in red or blue and the keyword "hot" or "cold" is highlighted in colour as appropriate. There is no acoustic signal.

Driver comfort is also a main concern of the Easy Drive variant. Available driver's seat designs are synthetic leather or fabric. A backrest extension for the driver's seat can be selected as an accessory.

Three different variants of the spacious operator platform are available also for the Easy Drive design.

- Various designs of the ROPS cabin are available: Cabin with split door and cabin with non-split door. Both are available for Tier 3 and Tier 4 machines.

A safety belt monitoring device is available as an option.

The engine cannot be started with the armrest folded up. Moreover, a warning signal is given if the armrest is folded up while driving and the machine will automatically stop if the signal is ignored (engine remains on). Increases the distance between the left side armrest and the driver's seat, providing the driver with more room between the armrests.

1. Working lights: 4 halogen headlights (LED also available) for illuminating the working area, 2 facing forward and 2 facing backward.   2. Lighting package as per road traffic regulations: Mounting of headlights at the front, reverse drive light, tail lights, indicators front and rear and stop lights rear to comply with German road regulations.   3. Drum edge lighting: Additional illumination of the drum edge to achieve optimal compaction up to the edges.   A Coming Home feature is additionally available in conjunction with the working lights if required. When the ignition key is turned to the zero position, the working lights will remain on for a time after switching off the ignition. This ensures safe exit from the roller especially when working on sites at night.
Mechanical 90° seat rotation and mechanical right/left seat sliding allow the driver to optimise his driving position, so he can always see the most important areas during compacting.	The camera system monitors the working area behind the machine. The system comprises a camera mounted at the top rear of the cabin and a monitor in the driver's cab.

4. WATER SPRINKLING SYSTEM

The HD+ rollers have some useful features for sprinkling water on the drum. The desired water supply is controlled automatically in dependence on driving speed.

The panoramic cabin or the open driver platform enable unobstructed view of the spraying beam and the spraying nozzles. In addition, the spraying beam is mounted so cleverly that it can be installed and removed in the twinkling of an eye.

5. DRIVE UNIT

ENGINE TECHNOLOGY

At the end of 2020, the HD+ 90i-110i machine types will also meet the EU Stage V emissions standard. The diesel engine is switched off automatically when the machine stands still for more than three minutes. Lighting is also switched off except for the parking lights. The engine must be restarted after it is shut off. The automatic engine-off function reduces diesel fuel consumption and preserves engine components, thus extending service intervals. All engines by 56 kW (75.1 hp) additionally require an SCR in order to comply with the Tier 4 final standard.

DRIVE UNIT: VARIANTS

Diesel engine with high output – 85 kW (114 HP) The engine covers all power requirements, i.e. basic load and power peaks.

Machines with large diesel engines are primarily suited for fields with demanding terrain (many ascents).

Diesel engine 55.4 KW (74.3 HP) + hydraulic accumulator

Diesel engine with tuned output (lower engine rated output + accumulator for hydraulic energy)

Mode of functioning of the Power Hybrid

- Power peaks are covered by the hydraulic accumulator (e.g. when the vibration drives are ramped up and during acceleration/starting)

- Power reserves of the diesel engine are used to charge the hydraulic accumulator.

Advantages of the Power Hybrid

- Sustainable drive system

- Simplified after-treatment of exhaust gases (AdBlue/DEF not required)

- Up to 15 % reduction of fuel consumption due to hybrid drive and start-stop system

- CO2 saving

- 50 % less noise compared to HD+ 90i with diesel engine (due to electric cooler and smaller engine)

- Same operation as a standard machine

- Cost-efficient overall solution

Production of the HD+ Power Hybrid is planned to start in mid-2017.

6. HAMMTRONIC

Electronic machine management

The Hammtronic electronic machine management system is used to monitor all engine and vehicle functions. It includes automatic adjustment of drive unit, vibration/oscillation and engine speed to the current operating conditions. It is available as standard for all Tier 3 and Tier 4 machines.

Top 5 advantages:

- Smooth acceleration and braking (soft ramping)

- Reduced noise levels

- Machine management supports driver to prevent operator errors

- Even and improved compaction quality

Homogeneous compaction is achieved as a result of the speed and frequency control.

7. 3-POINT ARTICALATION

Top 5 advantages: Excellent on-centre-feel, Even weight distribution, Low pressing into the asphalt when cornering, Damping of shocks, Increased tilt stability

The turning circle of the HD+ is extremely tight. Therefore, even the larger models can easily manoeuvre in small spaces.

8. SPECIAL APPLICATIONS

There are four different options for special applications for the Series HD+ rollers.

Edge pressing and cutting device

Edge pressing device: The edge pressing device is used to slope and compact asphalt to create contact surfaces.

Edge cutting device: The cutting device can be used to cut still-warm asphalt to correct mistakes.

Chip spreader: The purpose is to blunt asphalt surfaces in order to improve initial adhesion.

- Track offset

Top 3 advantages: Compaction along seams (pressing from the cold side). Steering along obstacles (e.g. curbs). Improved surface quality due to less imprints

HCQ

This umbrella term covers the measurement and documentation modules for monitoring and controlling compaction and the compaction processes. The HAMM Compaction Meter measures using a digital acceleration sensor.

WITOS HCQ add-on: Process data is available in real-time via the internet already during compacting. Data is transmitted via mobile radio from the HCQ Navigator panel-PC to the Wirtgen Group WITOS portal, where authorised persons can view and download data.

9. SERVICE

All parts of maintenance and servicing are easily accessible. Parts requiring regular maintenance are located on one machine side. In general, maintenance is required only at large intervals. Here is an overview of the most important parts of maintenance. Option: Battery isolating switch. HD+ 70i-80i, HD+ 90(i)-140(i): electronic
